The Friends of Bitter Lake NWR (est. 2000) is a non-profit organization committed to working with the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge to increase public awareness and promote a better understanding of the refuge's goals and appreciation of the uniqueness of the area.

Memberships fees, donations, and the Dragonfly Festival generate funds that help support refuge projects. This includes developing and updating the Butterfly Trail, producing trail leaflets, purchasing trees and wildflowers, and sponsoring outreach activities (the annual Dragonfly Poster contest and the Dragonfly Festival and environmental education programs with local schools).

Why does this refuge need our help?
Due to the increase of visitors to this marvelous site, over 44,000 people last year alone, we feel that in order to accommodate more in the future we need to make access to this facility an even more enjoyable experience.   The Friends assist with conservation projects, scientific studies, community outreach, tours, facility development, and many other activities.
