Message from the president

Fall 2009

The fall migration is well underway with song birds, shorebirds, and hawks moving south for the winter.  Sandhill cranes are arriving as are ducks and geese.  It is a great time to visit the refuge at dawn or sunset to watch the cranes fly out and return to roost at night.  If you haven’t sit on the bluff on the southern end of the refuge and watched thousands of cranes return from feeding in area farm fields you have missed one of the unique events in southeastern New Mexico.

Refuge staff and Friends have also started the monthly early morning tours the first Saturday of each month.  If you have wondered about restricted areas, endangered species protection, or wildlife management in general this is a wonderful opportunity for an educational experience for the family.  Call 625-4011 for more information and topics or visit us online at http://www.friendsofbitterlake.com.

Public Notice regarding Salt Cedar Control at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Bitter Lake NWR is pet friendly. Dogs are allowed as long as they are kept on a leash.

Located where the Chihuahuan Desert meets the Southern Plains, Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge is one of the more biologically significant wetland areas of the Pecos River watershed system. Established in 1937 to provide wintering habitat for migratory birds, the Refuge plays a crucial role in the conservation of wetlands in the desert Southwest.

Straddling the Pecos River, Bitter Lake NWR is truly a jewel, a wetland oasis inhabitated by a diverse abundance of wildlife species. The Refuge protects and provides habitat for some of New Mexico's most rare and unusual creatures such as the least shrew, Noel's amphipod, least tern and Roswell spring snail.

There is no entrance fee and tours are held periodically free of charge.

We also have a new gift shop in our brand new Joseph R. Skeen Visitor Center.
Visitor Center hours are Tuesday-Saturday 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
